Postpartum Preparation

Have you thought about your fourth trimester?

The first few weeks with your baby. The time when your body heals and recovers from pregnancy and birth whilst you adjust to life with a newborn.

If not, you are not alone.

I talk to many parents whose focus was to prepare for birth and who didn’t plan much for their postpartum only realise afterward how overwhelmed and unprepared they were for the physical, emotional and practical changes they experienced.

Preparing for postpartum is more than setting up the nursery and deciding on which pram to get.

It is also about setting realistic expectations, planning on how to recover well, how to avoid postpartum depression and how to be supported in the transition into parenthood.

Preparing for your postpartum is to plan on how you are going to

  • heal and recover from pregnancy and birth,

  • get enough sleep and rest,

  • learn how to breastfeed,

  • spend time skin-to-skin with your baby to bond,

  • feed yourself (and your family) with nourishing foods,

  • receive bodywork,

  • keep your relationship with your partner healthy,

  • receive practical, emotional and mental support,

  • set healthy boundaries,

  • keep your stress levels low and your oxytocin levels high,

  • get time for self-care and so much more.

Let’s prepare for a postpartum that supports healing, well-being, breastfeeding and bonding.

  • Doing the workbook exercises led to some good conversations with my husband about things we hadn't really communicated or considered yet.

  • Thank you for the workbook. It’s a great book with many valuable aspects but also kept short so that it is easy to work through. It helped me to prepare well for my postpartum. We've been home for more than a week now and have had a very nice time together so far - the wounds are healing, but I also notice how vulnerable I am and how quickly my emotions can still change. Still, I feel like I can enjoy it a lot more this time because I've internalised the meaning of postpartum a lot more through your book.
