Sydney Postpartum Support

“Mothering the Mother”

The first six weeks following birth is one of the most critical periods for the baby and the mum. Often, I see mums giving all of themselves for their new baby but neglecting their own well-being even though it is just as critical for them to be mothered!

This period postpartum should be a time for every mum to not just provide for but to bond and fall in love with her newborn and a time for her to rest and allow her body to heal and recover from childbirth.

With families living far away and their partners returning to work shortly after the birth, I have seen mums feeling alone, overwhelmed and exhausted as they battle with the desire to be a good mum and the guilt of not being able to cope.

Postpartum Care is for every mum who wants to be her best self, and I believe this should never be a luxury but a necessity. Every mum needs and deserves to be mothered over this period; nurtured in a non-judgmental way so that the best mum within her will be available for her new baby.

Postpartum Support - How does it look like?

Be Prepared

A catch up will be organised after you engage me as your Doula to establish a Postpartum Plan that is tailored to your personal and family circumstances and needs. During this catch-up, we will aim to identify your ‘ideal’ postpartum, which includes setting out a plan that identifies your postpartum needs and support network, as well as establishing the type of care you need from me.

In addition to this, I will answer all the questions you may have and provide you information about breastfeeding, newborn behaviour and infant care. This aims to reduce any potential anxiety and self-doubt. I believe that having a good postpartum plan and education will empower you to face your postpartum and motherhood with confidence.

Postpartum Visit

Postpartum Care starts once you and your baby are back at home. We will make arrangements for me to come to your home and provide you with all the support you have identified you need. I will be available to you as regularly as you need, especially in the first six weeks postpartum to ensure that you are cared for.

Your postpartum care may include the following:

  • Breastfeeding support such as latching, different positions and breastmilk production.

  • Postpartum massage and bodywork (find out more) to promote healing and well-being.

  • Gentle movement and breathing exercises to promote recovery and pelvic floor health.

  • Meal preparation and cooking nourishing postpartum meals in your home.

  • Help with newborn care.

  • Newborn settling techniques.

  • First baby bath.

  • Simple infant massage instruction.

  • Support to find your own parenting style and to trust your instincts and intuition.

  • Practical in-home support such as light home cleaning and laundry.

  • Birth debrief.

  • Practical, emotional and mental support.

What Families Are Saying

Sarah, 1st-time Mum

“Damaris has been an absolute godsend in our postpartum journey.

Being first time parents we did our research in the support we might need. We decided a doula was important in building out our village. After doing our research we found Damaris had the same approach we were taking and aligned in what we found important. Most importantly, she is a warm person that I knew I could rely on.

Knowing she was coming every week gave both myself and my husband peace of mind. We always knew we had someone to run our questions past and a pair of hands. Her massages were magic for me sore back and the different resources she provided will be relevant for years to come. I can not recommend her enough.”

Chris, 1st-time Dad

“My partner and I engaged Damaris to help support and guide us through the birth of our first daughter.
Both being from overseas, and with no family in Australia, we knew that having additional help and expert advice would be needed. The difference that Damaris made during this time was so much greater than I had expected. From the first meeting she listened and understood what was important to us as a family, tailoring her approach to us.
Damaris provided healthy and tasty home cooked meals, relaxing soothing massages for Mum, helping around the house and reassuring advice was always at hand. But most of all Damaris gave us time to spend the first days and weeks with our beautiful daughter. For that we are so grateful. Thank you Damaris.”

Natasha, 1st-time Mum

“Damaris was a wonderful support to my husband and I during our Postpartum period. She was supportive and gave very good advice for the appointments we would attend and also with our newborn. She supported us immensely in our home with household support and tasty meals.
Damaris also provided massages and tips on my recovery from a c section which has helped my recovery.”

Katie, 2nd-time Mum

“As a second-time mum, I felt okay with looking after a baby- what I learned from my first experience was that I needed to look after myself, too. That’s where Damaris stepped in. She not only made space for me to get a much-needed physical break but gently guided me to really prioritise rest (both mentally and physically)- a concept that was challenging for me to accept at first but something that will last well beyond the fourth trimester. What worked best for myself and my family was a weekly visit from Damaris.

Her postnatal massages are a must and helped me avoid those aches and pains from pregnancy and hours spend nursing in awkward positions. She made sure I was comfortable, used beautiful essential oils, and I’d almost always fall asleep it was so relaxing. Her belly massage is the best! Damaris would also help with housework, meals, and the baby so I could get in some much needed extra rest. Knowing that I had set aside this time for me every week was so, SO good, and helped me get through the tougher days. I now firmly prioritise rest, knowing that it is not just for me but my family too. Every new mum needs Damaris!”

Testimony

  • Diana, 1st-time Mum

“I reached out for postpartum support because of the unknown! Being a first-time mother, it’s near impossible to navigate my way through all the information that’s out there. I wanted specific advice for my newborn and needed a hands-on, one-on-one and a direct approach to all my newborn problems. Every baby is different and there’s no one answer to specific problems. Damaris assisted me in every aspect of my fourth trimester from new baby questions, breastfeeding, pumping to nutrition, relaxation techniques, doctor appointments and mental support. Sometimes it’s just reassuring that what me and Bub are going through is normal.

The nonjudgmental, impartial talks about myself and my feelings was one of my greatest takeaways. Damaris allowed me to be open and express myself so I can better understand what I’m going through more clearly. I enjoyed the daily updates of how Bub was going and how everyday was a new concern answered.

I loved her undivided attention and professionalism. I can’t emphasise enough that Damaris sincerely wanted to help me, on a personal and physical level.

And of course the massages! Get the massages! I miss them already! And she’s a fantastic cook too!

Damaris has been wonderful to me and my daughter.”
